E-retail continues to fare well

The IMRG E-retail Sales Index reached 5695 in April, an increase of 13% compared to April 2009. Although it's down 3% from March a month-on-month decline is typical during the month of April when Mother's Day falls in mid-late March.

UK shoppers spent an estimated £4.38 billion online during April compared to an estimated £3.9 billion in April 2009.

Home and garden index recording particularly strong growth of 32% year-on-year, fine weather to thank according to Tina Spooner, Director of Information at IMRG, encouraging "DIY enthusiasts and gardeners to get spending online, resulting in the average basket value for home and garden retailers soaring 64% compared to the same month last year.".

The weather doesn't seem to be the only factor that influences market figures, nature also affects the travel industry. The Travel sector slowed to just 5% in April, early indication of the impact of the volcanic ash cloud on the travel industry.

The number of businesses attempting an online presence continues to grow with growth levels of 13%. Chris Webster, Vice President of Capgemini believes businesses are doing this to "attract a new market and retain existing customers."

The good news within e-retail is that cardholder not present card fraud is down for the first time according to UK Cards Association, formerly APACS.

But this good news is no excuse to become complacent as weak online fraud prevention practices continues to cost retailers dearly.

Another cost to retailers seem to be failed deliveries apparently costing retailers £146m.
